Meeting Minutes - September 20, 2000
Pauquette Park Shelter

Attendees: Russell Bellman, Jim Bernett, Nancy Braker, Steve Braker, Tom Kemp, Theresa Plenty, Gary Sorenson, Dave Egan, Jill Sampson, Bob Sampson, Steve Mueller, Jill Nooyen, Rex Rynlander, Ira Kastenberg

Meeting called to order at 6:32 pm by Nancy Braker, president.

Minutes were approved from the August 16 meeting.

PUBLICITY

  • Nancy Braker passed around the Portage Daily Register article that featured the Friends of Rowan Creek.
  • Steve Mueller agreed to post a flyer promoting the Oct. 14 event to local organizations and businesses. Theresa Plenty will produce the flyer.
  • Steve Mueller, Gary Sorenson and Theresa Plenty agreed to write an article for the next Trout Unlimited newsletter. Theresa Plenty agreed to start a rough draft based on past press releases and articles about the Friends of Rowan Creek.
  • Publicity Committee was established. Gary Sorenson, Steve Mueller and Theresa Plenty volunteered to be on the committee.
  • Steve Braker has a hand drawn and colored map available of the Rowan Creek watershed for reference.
  • Steve Braker and Gary Sorenson gave a report and showed a sample of the first Friends of Rowan Creek brochure. It needs editing and will be completed soon. Photos of Rowan Creek from John Wacholtz collection may be used in the brochure.
  • Steve Braker reported that the logo is not complete yet.

DNR RIVER PLANNING GRANT

  • Nancy Braker handed out a copy of the DNR River Planning Grant project description and reported that it was submitted September 1 and that she is waiting for approval.
  • Nancy Braker handed out a Task Report Form to document any volunteer time spent on behalf of the Friends of Rowan Creek.
  • There was discussion about having the water temperature monitored from year to year. Jim Bernett suggested that the schools may want to do this as a project.

ACTIVITIES

  • Theresa Plenty reported that Dennis Linn approved having the prairie planting along the Rowan Creek trail near the Poynette Health Clinic. Jill and Bob Sampson have been mowing this area of the trail and are interested in helping with the project. Jill Sampson has contacted the schools to get art students involved in a design and fifth grade students involved in other aspects. Bob Sampson will contact Digger's Hotline. Theresa Plenty will contact the Village to let them know the dig date. The group will start preparing the soil on Oct. 14 at 9 am. Anyone interested in helping, bring a shovel.
  • Nancy Braker reported a donation of 500 prairie plants each spring for the next three years from the Prairie Nursery .
  • October 14 Lynn Hanson and Nancy Braker will give a cultural and natural tour of the Poynette/Dekorra area.
  • Nancy Braker asked the group if the DNR should give a public lecture if we get the grant to explain the Rowan Creek watershed and other significant aspects.
  • Tom Kemp suggested having a photo display of the entire Rowan Creek watershed.
  • Steve Mueller and Nancy Braker will organize a winter event. It may be the second weekend of February. Someone will need to contact the Village to see if the group can have a bonfire near the trail head.
  • Jim Bernett reported that the DRN plans to have a small burn across from the snowmobile bridge in October after a hard frost to freshen up grasses and get rid of unwanted vegetation. Gary Sorenson, Dave Egan, Nancy Braker, Steve Braker volunteered to help. If anyone is interested in helping with the burn they should contact Jim Bernett at 742-4540. The burn may take place during the week in the morning.
  • Jim Bernett is interested in organizing a event this spring to discuss the fish of Rowan Creek. He would have a discussion and electo shock the creek. A date has not been determined.

UPCOMING EVENTS

  • October 14, 2000 * 9 am - 12 noon- Prairie Planting. Learn how to prepare a site for a prairie planting. Bring a shovel.
  • October 14, 2000 * 1-3 pm * Natural History Walk - Theme: Natural, cultural sites, Native American history - Speakers, Lynn Hanson and Nancy Braker. Park at Alliant. Winter * Cross Country Skiing and walk/hike into early evening followed by a camp fire and sing along with folk singers. Steve Mueller will organize this event.
  • Spring * Co-Sponsor flower walk with Friends of MacKenzie
  • Spring * Trout Discussion and shock

UPCOMING MEETINGS

  • Nancy Braker and Dave Egan will give a lecture at the October meeting called "An Introduction to the Ecology of the Rowan Creek Valley.
  • Nancy Braker reported that the November meeting date needed to be rescheduled to accommodate having Ken Potter come to discuss the possibility of having his graduate students study Rowan Creek in 2001. The November meeting was changed to November 1.
  • Nancy Braker reported that the December meeting needed to be changed because of the holiday. The December meeting was changed to December 6. Jill Sampson will check with the schools to see if there is a possible meeting place.
